Species ID Suggestions

Hairy Woodpecker

Picoides villosus

The nest is most likely from a wasp or hornet.
I just picked other because there was also a bird in the photo. I was going to ID the bird and the nest/hive in the same spotting, such as Bird ID/Hive ID. Is it okay to put it in other since there are two different species from different kingdoms in the photo? Thanks.
Hello. Based on your selection of mission, I moved this spotting from "other" to the arthropod category. It may be a safer ID to make the bird the focus of your spotting (therefore Birds). "Other" is (perhaps understandably) often misinterpreted to mean "unknown" but the thing to remember is that "other" is concerned with categories. It represents those organisms that can't fit into the regular PN categories, like worms, snails, clams, squid, starfish and others :-)
They look nearly identical to me...I'll check my other photos to see if I can see his mouth, which would give it away.
Looks more like a Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens). The nest could be a hornet or bee hive.
