Field Notes

Description:

Watching the Wood Stork fishing is fascinating. It fishes by holding its bill open in the water while it scares fish into the direction of it's bill by stomping on one side or the other of it's bill. Once a fish is detected it has the fastest response in closing it's bill shut. Sightings of wood storks in south florida were not so long ago a rare occurrence however they have made wonderful progress in increasing their numbers. Now sightings of wood storks by my estimation are fairly common compared to sightings of spoonbills which are rare.
