Field Notes

Description:

Vagrant and rare for California<br> During the breeding the male is overall black and has white wings. During the winter the male really changes to more like a Vesper sparrow, but has a black chin. The female has a white chin. Brown head and back and light colored underneath. Streaks across head, back, chest and flanks. Large grey bill Light colored mustache with spot at the end. Face closely resembles the Vesper Sparrow.

Habitat:

This one was spotted near a field.

Notes:

Spotted near a flock of White-crowned Sparrows at an observation deck to a wildlife refuge.
