smaller than normal and more irregular in shape than is normal for A muscaria with fewer spots

Moss on ground - edge of the trail, a slight raise up from the walking area, at the edge of a tree line. Where I'd expected to find chantys. You're right it is rather small - about 1 1/2 inch across. It doesn't quite look like A muscaria to me, but is looks more Amanita than Leratiomyces ceres, which I think I've seen.
This looks really quite small and in the incorrect habitat for A. muscaria. Is that moss on wood? Consider Leratiomyces ceres.
