Field Notes

Description:

Beautiful bird hopping around at the lake shore. First time I have seen one of these birds. Very excited.

Habitat:

Lake and woodlands of the Poconos

Notes:

I thought this was a Sandpiper, but I used the Stokes Field Guide to Birds and can not find this one with the unusual markings/stripes.

Great photo! They're amazing birds...I was on a tour bus once and a killdeer was doing her broken-wing act to lure the bus away from her nest...it was rather funny! We were in a sanctuary so she was safe!!
Thanks so much beallburton for the ID. Definitely a Killdeer similar to the sandpiper. And usually this bird is only in PA during the summer. WOW!
Lovely! You should go back when they are nesting. They build their nests on the ground & the female will feign a broken wing to attempt to lure potential predators (including humans!) away from her babies!
