I believe that's a seed pod from a vine of some sort. if you return to where you found that, you may be able to find the vine that produced it. We get those here as well in western ny, among the scrub brush. it's very reminiscent of the sponge plants (the plants that are grown industrially for the scrubby sponges that are sold in the beauty section of the supermarkets).
