Description:

Banded Sphinx, late in the season ... didn't spot one back in the summer, when there were so many moths to see.

Habitat:

Scooba, Miss.

Notes:

Originally ID'ed as Eumorpha vitis, Vine Sphinx. Spotting corrected.

Thank you, ForestDragon! Now that I know what difference I'm looking for, I see you are quite right. I'll make the correction.
suzmonk, I believe this is a Banded Sphinx. They are very similar. The Banded Sphinx ( Eumorpha fasciatus ) has a solid brown front edge to the forwings, whereas the Vine Sphinx (Eumorpha vitis) does not. http://bugguide.net/node/view/55225 http://bugguide.net/node/view/4747
Looking online a bit more. This might be Banded Sphinx Moth, Eumorpha fasciatus, instead ... any moth experts?
