Field Notes
Description:
Prickly vine like plant, with long trailing or low arching canes. Usually trifoliolate, occasionally 5-foliolate leaves. White flowers, producing black, when ripe, berries.
Habitat:
Commonly found forming dense patches in fields, along fences, roads, and in thickets. These were growing among large limestone boulders on a wooded hillside.
Notes:
Dewberries and blackberries form juicy, blue-black berries that make excellent juices, jams, cobblers, and pies. They are also good fresh. The berries also provide important food and shelter for many kinds of wildlife.
