Field Notes

Description:

Brown and black woodpecker with a large white rump patch visible only when flying. Black necklace above a speckled breast. Red spot on nape of neck. Only woodpecker who feeds on the ground.

Habitat:

This woodpecker was spotted in our backyard during a big snowstorm. Don't know if he was hiding high up in the tree or pecking on the bark of the tree to get at bugs. He was there for a long time. Felt so sorry for it.

Thanks for comment ChristyHolland. I felt so sorry for that flicker that day. It was really snowing heavily.
Nice colors!! They're built for the weather and usually there are places they can escape from the snow.
