Field Notes

Description:

Medium to large duck, drake has a chestnut brown breast, iridescent green head with white neck ring, yellow bill with tip black, gray and white upper body. The tail is black with white feathers and lower body is gray.

Hen is mottled brown with solid brown wing tips. Bill is orange with mottled black on it.

Habitat:

Wetlands, lakes, rivers and streams, city parks. Can be seen in bodies of water as small as road side ditches.

Notes:

Most common duck in North America and one of the few duck species thta have been domesticated.
