Field Notes

Description:

very much like the edible strawberries but the fruits are slightly different - the receptacles are round, fleshy and brilliantly red with tiny rounded fruits protruding from them, making the berries look like rough surfaced balls.
Flowers are five-petalled and white. Leaves are serrated and obovate. The plants have runners and creep low on the ground.

Habitat:

ornamental gardens and lawns. This is a native of North America but grows wild in many parts of the world.

Notes:

This is a very pretty plant and one of my favourite wild plants. It is seen as a weed but has close associations with quite a from the insect world. In the US, it is said that the nectar from the flowers of this plant is the favoured food source for the Eastern Tailed Blue Butterfly ( Cupido comyntas)
