Field Notes

Description:

Black caterpillar with gray speckles and long, black spikes that branch out. There's red-brown spots that run down the back. The hairs appear gray and the prolegs are the same red-brown as the stripe. The adult can be seen at: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8519768 and the chrysalis at http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8519768

Habitat:

Schoolyard with various plants and trees. "These butterflies lay eggs in clusters around twigs of their favored food plants, in Europe, generally Grey Willow (Salix cinerea) and in North America, generally Black Willow (Salix nigra) but also other willow species, as well as poplar, elm, birch, and hackberry." - Wikipedia

Notes:

One of my teen nature enthusiasts spotted this caterpillar crawling on the school wall. It didn't like being handled and kept rolling up. Aka Spiny Elm caterpillar.
