Field Notes

Description:

This female wasp will never fly. These used to scare us crazy as tiny kids and I really haven't seen them much since then. She is about 25mm long, feeds on mole-crickets, a distinctive metallic blue-green body, with red legs.

Habitat:

Exploring a suburban back yard garden bed (freshly turned)

Notes:

Also called 'Blue ant'. The male is smaller, approximately 15 mm (0.5 inches), and has wings. Adults feed on nectar, and pollinate various native Australian flowers.
I WILL get some good shots of this girl. Whenever I find her she's moving very quickly.
