Field Notes

Description:

Approx 6 cms in length ..red markings in the tip of wings. blue/green markings along the body.

Habitat:

Spotted around the area of a yard tree that is starting to lose it's small bud like flower blossoms.

Notes:

Thankyou for the knowledge on telling damsels and dragons apart...very useful :)

Ok , thats great info about the eyes , which will help in future ...i visit a closeby pond and the damsels are always bright blue or red , which is why i wasn''t sure on this one ...and after a day of babies/nymphs around ...was in the mindset of juveniles.
Sorry just found this spotting. ID looks good. Apart from size and robustness damsels have separate 'popped out' eyes where dragons have eyes forming a head shield. Good side shots like these of thorax patterns are important for ID.
Thanks Kibuyu ...i am still looking the damselflys we get around here are Coenagrionoidea - Genus Ischnura, Genus Austroagrion , Genus Xanthagrion, Genus Coenagrion and Family Lestidae - Genus Austrolestes ..which after further looking ..Austrolestes cingulatus looks similiar.
It looks more like a damselfly, the way it sits with folded wings - it isn't Hemicordulia, which is a larger dragonfly.
