Field Notes

Description:

Found these bright flowers on hike through the woods at the Arc of Appalachia reserves. Stemless perennial herb to 6 inch tall. Flower colour white to pale lavender. Genus Hepatica is linked to the Greek liver. (plant used previously for liver ailments)

Habitat:

Rich wet deciduous woodland.

Notes:

Species are pollinated and the seeds dispersed by insects. (Spring bees and flies are main pollinators)
