Description:

The red-bellied black snake is a species of elapid snake native to eastern Australia. Though its venom can make you quite sick, it is not generally fatal. As snakes go, this narrow-headed, glossy black snake is quite attractive!

Habitat:

It is common in woodlands, forests and swamplands of eastern Australia. It is common in urban areas along the eastern coast of Australia.

Notes:

This photo was taken on the rock surrounding a frog-pond near Atherton, Qld.

OOOH My favorite Australian snake! They were realy common in Wallaby Creek when I did field work there many years ago. I hope they are still doing well as a species. We came across some large ones at the margin of cattle grazing fields.
