Field Notes

Description:

Small brown moth with avg. wingspan 1.25 cm. Forewing has patterning in darker brown fascia - band runs diagonally across wing. Costal spot appears cut off toward outside rear of forewing.

Habitat:

Populous throughout the U.S. and Canada. Feeds on plants. Larvae feed on strawberries (as well as other plants), but prefer older plant material including dead and decaying leaves.

Notes:

This moth belongs to the family "Tortricidae" - the leaf roller moths. Many are pest species because they have developed a taste for specific fruits - including apples.

Clepsis peritana is also known as the Strawberry Garden Tortrix. Although these moths prefer an agriculturally important fruit, their taste for older leaves (rather than the fruit itself) makes them not considered to be a pest insect.
