Field Notes

Description:

Aphonopelma hentzi is one of the most common species of tarantula thriving in the southern-most United States today. Brown tarantulas can grow in excess of a four inch leg span, and weigh more than 3 ounces as adults. The body is dark brown. Shades may vary between individual tarantulas and are more distinct after a molt. (information from Wikipedia)

Habitat:

Rural area outside of town

Notes:

Many states like to claim this species as their own and will assign such names as "Texas brown tarantula" or "Oklahoma brown tarantula." Since it occurs in at least 7 different states, I'm not going to put a state's name on it. I simply call it the brown tarantula. :-)

This girl is missing the 2nd leg on her right side. You can see it best in the 2nd photo.
