Field Notes

Description:

This katydid is approximately 3 inches long (body) and is a female as indicated by the sword like ovipositor, jutting past the abdomen. Note the details of the forewings and the amazing mimicry of leaf veins, decay, and herbivory!

Habitat:

Rainforest of the upper Amazon, down river from Iquitos, Peru.

Notes:

The best time to find leaf mimic katydids is at night when they are actively foraging. A slow walk down a rainforest trail with a head lamp or flashlight often results in several spottings. During the day they are incredibly well camouflaged and very difficult to find.
