Field Notes

Description:

Large, beautiful shelf fungus, 6-7 inches across at its widest point. No ID, but I hope someone can help. White and cream with a purple-brown stripe at the edge of the caps. Close-ups of underside and top included in series. It's growing on the trunk of a distressed hardwood tree.

Habitat:

The tree this fungus is growing on was heavily damaged in a fire several years ago. The top and branches were consumed by fire, leaving only a tall, partially hollow stump. About the time the owners were looking into removing it, the tree started sending out new small branches from the relatively undamaged parts of the stump ... so they let it be, to survive as best it could. So it's a funny-looking tree but it keeps on. This fungus is growing on the more heavily damaged side of the stump.

Species ID Suggestions

Looks like a promising possibility, Mark, but I haven't yet seen anything so pale, so lightly colored. I'll keep exploring Fomitopsidaceae ... thanks for the tip.
Looking for a little ID help on this beautiful shelf fungus. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
