Field Notes
Description:
This medium to large moth is about 50mm across with it's wings closed. The orange around the head and thorax is not common.
Habitat:
Resting on a building wall under light fittings in a local nature reserve.
Notes:
Sometimes called 'Urticating Anthelid' because the hairs from the caterpillar 'urts. <br> This moth is incredibly variable coming in colours including grey, cream, green, yellow, tan, brown and the various markings may each be present or not. Because it's many cousins are also similar and often equally variable it can be very hard to ID. One issue I still have with this ID is the two spots on each wing. Most examples show a larger outer spot and both spots are usually circular where this one has a tear drop shape for the inner spot. <br>
