Field Notes

Description:

Adult: 1) Medium-sized, slender, pale-grey flycatcher. 2) Very long, deeply-forked, black and white tail. 3) Orange/pink wash on lower belly and flanks 4) Darker wings contrast with paler body.

Juveniles: 1) Stockier and shorter-tailed than adult. 2) Buffy orange wash on belly. 3) Pale whitish gray head and breast. 4) Darker olive/gray on back and wings

Habitat:

Specific Habitat: I observed 5 Scissor-tailed Flycatchers on the boundary between a farm and the Winfred Thomas Agricultural Research Station at 372 Walker Lane in Hazel Green, Alabama. General Habitat: Preferred habitats include open country along roadsides and on ranches with scattered trees and bushes. Scissor-tailed Flycatchers perch conspicuously on utility lines, treetops, and fence lines.
