Field Notes

Description:

An auk species found in the Northern Pacific and Atlantic. This bird spends most of its life at sea but returns to rocky cliffs to breed. Chicks jump from the cliffs into the water when they are around 20 days old. From there, the mothers stay at the nests for a few more weeks while the males accompany the chicks for around 2 months on the ocean, teaching them skills for living before they need to fend for themselves.
