Field Notes
Description:
This fast moving insect with narrow head and thorax was about 20 mm long. The anterior part of the abdomen appeared significantly thicker than tapering posterior segments. Eyes were large and the whole body was a dark brown colour. <br> It walked fast on thin long legs and had no wings.
Habitat:
Spotted crossing a paved road in a suburban area.
Notes:
Belonging to the family Stratiomyidae, these are common flies with larvae that feed on composting vegetation.
