Field Notes

Description:

Motherwort is one of the tallest members of the Mint family growing in North America. Its strange name simply means "mother's plant" and may have been given because of an old belief that the plant could aid discomforts connected with pregnancy. The fruits of the winter weed are particularly spiky. Motherwort is a perennial, for it last through winter as a living root stock which will continue to send-up new stems each year.

Habitat:

Sunny roadsides. Pastures.
