Field Notes

Description:

To 6 inches. Sparrow-sized. Black and white. This is the tamest, smallest and most abundant of our eastern woodpeckers. It comes readily to the suet rack in the back yard. I use the suit feeder to distinguish the size between the Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers. Females have no red patch on the nape.

Habitat:

Wood lots, parks, and gardens; suet feeders in the winter.
