Field Notes

Description:

"The black squirrel is a melanistic subgroup of the grey squirrel." This meaning that the black squirrel has dark pigmented skin produced by two copies of mutual mutant genes. It is a subgroup because they are not as dominant as grey squirrels, however this is changing and they seem to be growing in the northern parts of America.

Habitat:

Black squirrels can be found in regions of the Midwestern and Northeastern United States, Ontario, Quebec. They can live wherever grey squirrels habit.

Notes:

Black squirrels are mostly abundant in Battle Creek, Michigan, however they can be seen as far as Santa Clara in the U.S.
