Field Notes

Description:

Adult male pronghorn, brown with a white rump, about 3 feet tall at the shoulder.

Habitat:

Wyoming basin: sagebrush steppe/rangeland.

Notes:

Spotted beside US 26 ~ 3¾ mi ESE of Natrona in central Wyoming. This was one of dozens of this species observed in grassland along several miles of highway. The image is a bit fuzzy because it was taken with a 300mm lens from a vehicle moving about 60 mph/100kmph. The technique used was: 1. spot animal in the distance; 2. roll down the window; 3. point the camera toward the animal; 4. visually acquire the animal through the camera's optics; 5. track; 6. operate shutter when the animal is abeam of the vehicle. It was crude, but it worked. (I was not driving, so it was also safe.)
