Description:

Similar to cardinal, but gray, with red markings on face, breast, crest, and wings.

Habitat:

Desert scrubland along southwest U.S. border, and south through central Mexico. This spotting in riparian zone of Sonoita Creek, Arizona.

Notes:

Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Reserve, southern Arizona.
The smaller bird is a house finch, Capodacus mexicanus.
