Field Notes

Description:

The breeding season has ended and the pups are out en mass. Pups are able to swim in the water straight out of birth. They can reach 5 - 6 feet long and weigh 300 pounds. The main difference between seals and sea lions is that the harbor seals have no ear flaps.

Habitat:

Ranging from Alaska to Baja, Mexico, Pacific Harbor Seals stick with shoreline coastal waters. Their favorite terrains include rocky islands, sandy beaches, mudflats, bays, and estuaries.

Notes:

Not as accustomed to the presence of humans as Harbor Seals in Southern California, the seals here become aggressive with the presence of people swimming in their water (not fun bet certainly thrilling, funny now looking back on it).
