Springbok Antelope
Antidorcas marsupialis
36.1556, -95.9766
Field Notes
Description:
One of several springbok at the Tulsa Zoo. This antelope is the only member of its genus and is perhaps known for its "pronking" behavior. This odd jumping is actually a defense mechanism against predators, especially cheetahs. As cheetahs can only maintain top speed for a short while before injury.
Habitat:
Springbok inhabit the dry areas of south and southwestern Africa. Their range extends from northwestern South Africa through the Kalahari desert into Namibia and Botswana.
