Cinnabar Polypore
Genus Pycnoporus
36.4047, -93.7384
Field Notes
Description:
There are more than one cinnabar polypore that have this distinct color, sadly. I still need to learn how to take spore prints, but I did try to get a shot under the cap and from a few angles. I had to do some acrobatics to get close to them--the fallen tree was propped in another live tree on a foothill slope!
Habitat:
Found growing on a dead fallen tree (maybe black cherry? I can't tell but the bark looks familiar) after several days of cold rain. Mixed forest, Ozark Highlands, 45°F/5°C. Found on a ridge and trail high above town.
