Field Notes

Description:

These next few spottings are all on the same Sabal palmetto, which I thought was neat. This is sword fern, also known as Boston fern, growing epiphytically on the tree itself. It's a very popular ornamental plant and I often joke with my friends when the huge Boston ferns come out for sale when Spring starts. Sword fern/Boston fern in its natural habitat loves humid and tropical forests and swamps which probably explains why it has such a poor track record as a houseplant for most of my friends. It can grow terrestrially and epiphytically and often does so on Sabal palmettos here in Florida.

Habitat:

Native to humid forests and swamps in tropical areas of the world. Such as the Southeastern US, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.
