Description:

Bloomed-out beardtongue ... there was more to it earlier. Three tiers of flowers on a bare stalk, see second photo.

Thanks for the insight. I agree it looks like Salvia lyrata, chesterbperry, and it was still shirt-sleeve weather in late October. I have photos here from two points in the year ... but both are just a quick click, not a careful survey. I'll look and see what else I might have.
I agree Lamiaceae, looks a lot like the spent flower spike of Salvia lyrata, but they do not usually last till October. There would have been some nice tubular flowers there while in bloom, really need some leaves to narrow it down.
Interesting, Sckel. I can see what you're talking about and I'll look into it ... thank you! And it looks, also, now that I see the last photo (ran across it in my archives) that the complete flower may have not ever been much more complicated than the "bloomed out" one I spotted in October.
Let me think ... errr, some kind of Lamiaceae? That's all, suzanne. :/
