Description:
Texas ebony is in the pea family (Fabaceae). A rather short slow-growing evergreen tree that reaches a height of 25-30 ft. The seeds can be roasted and eaten or used as a coffee substitute.
Habitat:
Spotted at the McAllen Nature Center in an open meadow. The tree grows in southern Texas and northeastern Mexico. According to Wikipedia, It can be found in the Tamaulipan matorral, Tamaulipan mezquital, Veracruz dry forests, and Yucatán dry forests ecoregions.
Notes:
According to Wikipedia: E. ebano is a host plant for the caterpillars of the coyote cloudywing (Achalarus toxeus) and Sphingicampa Blanchard. The seedpods host the bean weevils Stator beali and S. limbatus.
