Description:

This kind of goldenrod gall is caused by the larva of a midge fly. It stunts the growth of the stem, but not the leaves. Here's another kind: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/44010007.

You know, I saw a spotting of this kind of gall from someone else and went out to see if I could find one. It was late in the season, so mine's kind of beat up ... but I found one. I had seen goldenrod clumped up like that before, but I didn't know why.
