Field Notes

Description:

The Demoiselle Crane is the smallest species among the cranes, with a wingspan between 155-189cm. Its plumage is grey with black tail feathers, and black head and throat; on the head, a pale cap and the white band of plumes extending back from the ruby eyes, are the most prominent features.

Habitat:

Grassy area around an artificial lake in an animal park. However, it wasn't caged or in other way confined.

Notes:

According to wikipedia, this species is not usually seen in Central Europe, so I don't know if it got lost on a migration, or what it was doing in Germany.
