Field Notes

Description:

Similar to the Trumpeter Swan. The Trumpeter Swan's range rarely enters into California.
In California during the November and December the central valley gets the majority of the migrating Tundra Swans. Thousands fly into Butte Co to Merced Co.
In the first image is an adult, all white with black legs and bill. The bill is less connected to the eyes then the Trumpeter. Some and not all will have a yellow patch on the lores. Orange grin line. The head is slightly more rounded then the Trumpeter. The juveniles are a grayish or dirty white, with darker face. Bill would be almost pink.
During the winter they maybe seen flocking with other species such as in the last image. These are Snow and Ross's geese, White-fronted geese and assorted duck species.

Habitat:

Winters in this area mostly in rice ponds and shallow ponds.
