Its a termite thing but isn't that a mysterious bond between the two? If I am like them I don't want to be the one behind, what an awful life would I have if I'm the one behind and some bird or chicken hit the one at the front.
Wow what a complex life, and what a wide knowledge you have about these critters.
Seems like a couple of termite alate after detaching their wings. Try to separate them, the one behind will get lost and disorientated. The one behind follows the front one by scent and they can keep doing this for a long time.
