Field Notes

Description:

This beautiful couple has been hanging around my house for about a week now. I believe it is the male on top, since his neck looks redder than the other. As you can see, they like eating the agave flowers. They also like hanging out at the top of the pine tree in my front yard. I am hoping they build a nest within sight :)

I'd love to see the pic...animals do funny things...not always what's expected... ;-) You might want to contact a local raptor rehabilitator and see what they say about the nest boxes.
thanks for the comment, Christy! whatever she was eating on the plant, she was ripping it out! i think i have a pic of that, i'll go back and check. i LOVE your idea about building a box! thanks for the idea ;)
Nice capture! I think the kestrels might be eating things ON the agave flowers though...they are meat-eaters and will commonly take insects, rodents, small reptiles, etc...they do not eat flowers. Kestrels also nest in cavities...either made by other birds or in a man-made box. You can make or buy a kestrel nest box yourself...there should be dimensions on the internet...maybe you can get them to nest near you!!
