Field Notes

Description:

a small wild local bee, less than half an inch long, and apparently quite docile.

Notes:

This little local bee was in Bee's Paradise inside this Nagalingam flower. It was full of pollen and you can see it collected on it's legs, especially #3.
These bees have built their hive in a Neem tree outside my kitchen window.

pamsai, You're welcome... I just say what I feel! ;-)
thanks Laura for your lovely comment...
Such a detail and beauty! Loved it!! Thanks for sharing!
thanks Ashish for your ID. I looked at this one also, the only thing that threw me was the fact that Apis cerana makes it's hives in a hollow, and this one - presuming it comes from the hive that is just 3 meters away - makes a hive identical to the photo in Apis dorsica. Just that the size of the bee is smaller. There are very few bees in my area, so I imagine it belongs to the nest in my tree.

@Ashish, the 2nd link didn't lead anywhere...
thanks Ashish. Yes I looked at these. The nest looks the same, but much smaller, and there was a nest in this tree last year also, so they may be returning to the same place. The pattern on the bees is correct, only thing is they are smaller than stated here. Less than half an inch. Could it just be a smaller "cousin"?
Might be... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apis_dorsata http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apis_(genus)
Anyone from South India, know the name of these little wild bees?
