Description:

these are large friendly ants; these worker ants are wingless, dark shiny brown to black in color, and 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length; there are larger winged reproductive forms; body is constricted between the thorax and the abdomen; antennae are elbowed; they have a light dusting of golden hairs on their head and thorax and settle on their abdomens

Habitat:

On bark of willow oak tree; prefer to nest in living, standing trees, but will also nest in logs and wood in human structures.

Notes:

often invade homes in search of food; Omnivores, black carpenter ants eat protein foods, including other insects, as well as sugary foods; called carpenter ants because they are particularly good at woodworking
