Field Notes
Description:
Tillandsia usneoides is more commonly known as spanish moss. This plant consists of a lean stem that contains thin, wavy gray vines that resemble gray hair. The vines of this plant are between 2-6 centimeters long and roughly 1 millimeter wide. Tillandsia usneoides does not grow any aerial roots and sprouts flowers only seen when observed closely. It grows in like a chain to form hanging structures that have the ability to grow up to 6 meters in length.
Habitat:
Tillandsia usneoides grows in warm climates with a somewhat high level of humidity. Ironically, Spanish Moss does not grow in Spain. The places in which Spanish Moss is able to thrive include Virginia to the southeastern United States to Argnetina, Australia, Northampton County, and here in Hawaii.
Notes:
This plant was introduced into Hawaii in the 19th century, therefore making it an alien plant species. In Hawaii, the locals call it Pele's hair because it resembles the hair of Pelehonuamea, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire. It is a popular ornamental and lei plant in Hawaii.
