Field Notes

Description:

Black head with white grey body. The breeding plumage, a long feather extending from the head, was visible in a spotting scope.

Habitat:

This bird was found at the east end of Estrella Mountain Regional Park along the Gila River on the north side of Baseline Road from the developed portion of the Park. Three birds were found including one juvenile.

Notes:

The pictures aren't the best. I took both shots from at least 100 yards away on the opposite bank of the River. We were able to see both birds clearly with a spotting scope. The juvenile was too well hidden to get a good picture. The photos were taken with a 300mm lens and enlarged through Aperature software for Mac.
