Field Notes

Description:

The Yellow Spotted Salamander is black all over with yellow spots. It is a mole salamander, it spends most of its life in tunnels underground. In the spring, on the first rainy night after a warming period, they come out of the ground and had to vernal pools to find a mate and lay eggs.

Habitat:

Mixed hardwood forests.

Notes:

We found this one during Baltimore Woods' Amphibian Alert. We also saw Wood Frogs, Spring Peepers, Redbacked Salamanders, and another salamander that was difficult to identify. We found many of the Yellow Spotted ones!

Thank you, if you live in my neck of the woods (Central New York) it looks like tonight might even be a better night for salamander spotting (get it? spotting for the Spotted Salamander! HaHa) Just make sure you don't go looking for them in a thunderstorm!
Stunning shots of a beautiful animal! And I love the info!
