Field Notes

Description:

Bored wood in spiral and curved patterns. I believe a Wood-boring Beetle caused this.

Habitat:

I believe this was an oak tree that has been dead for a long time. This was at about 7000 ft elevation at Camp Mataguay.

Hi Lauren, it definitely could be. There was another downed tree nearby that didn't have a pattern like this. Could have been a different type of tree. Unfortunately when I saw it, I hadn't discovered PN yet.
This doesn't look like beetle damage to me. It kind of looks just natural.
