Description:
Also known as Leopard Garden Eel, they rise up in the sand halfway their body length, waving in the sand to feed on plankton. When approached they slide back into their holes. They grow to a length of about 40cm.
Habitat:
Found singly or in small groups on silty bottoms or gentle slopes across the Western Indo-Pacific region. Also found among sea grass, at depths of 5 to 40m.
Notes:
I spotted this garden eel when a boat anchor ploughed through a bed of sea grass near me and my dive buddy. It escaped the assault from above and swam away to look for a new hidey hole. It measured about 20cm.
