Description:

Large and impressive water beetle with streamlined outline. Appears silvery when seen underwater. Sometimes discovered after dark in late spring near water but on land, even on wet road surfaces. Larva feeds on water snails.

Habitat:

Widespread.

Thanks for the comments and ID help. It is indeed a water scavenger beetle, apparently the Great Silver (Diving) Beetle, according to a friend's wildlife book. :)
