Field Notes

Description:

Buffleheads are small black and white ducks which show an iridescence which ranges from black to green to a rust color when viewed from a close distance. Both sexes have a black upper body with white markings. The drakes head has a large white cap from just behind the eye to the top of the crown and directly behind the eye to the mid-head. The hen has a smaller and more subdued white marking on the cheeks.

Wooded ponds and lakes

Notes:

In these to pictures the drake is on the left and the hen on the right. A Coot (Mudhen) is with the bufflehead.
