Field Notes

Description:

This bird appears to be a miniature snow goose but is known as a separate species, Chen rossi. The bird is quite small in body, about the size of a Mallard duck, with a shorter neck than a Snow Goose, black wing tips, and pink to orange bill.

Habitat:

Tundra during breeding season, lakes, fresh or saltwater marshes in the winter

Notes:

This bird was a bit of a puzzle to identify as I had never seen an adult goose this small. All of the identification books listed this as a rare vagrant. I am beginning to use computer programs for my birding. In this case I used a phone app to verify sightings of this bird in our area and other sites in the state. The sightings reported were listed from a month ago to the day I did my search to confirm the bird's identification. I'm looking forward to trying this while in the field.
